New English Language Requirements

English Test

The Australian Government has updated the English Language Requirements for Student and Temporary Graduate visas. These changes, announced as part of the Migration Strategy on 11 December 2023, apply to all visa applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024.

The English language reforms aim to ensure that international students have a positive educational experience in Australia and are well-prepared for the skilled workforce if they choose to apply for a graduate visa after their studies.

Temporary Graduate Visa (TGV):

  • The minimum IELTS test score required for a TGV has increased from 6.0 to 6.5 (or equivalent), with a minimum score of 5.5 in each test component (reading, writing, speaking, and listening).
  • The test validity period for a TGV has decreased from 3 years to 1 year. TGV applicants must now provide evidence of completing an English Language test within 1 year before the visa application date.

Student Visa:

  • The minimum IELTS test score required for a Student visa has increased from 5.5 to 6.0 (or equivalent).
  • The minimum IELTS score required to undertake a packaged ELICOS course has increased from 4.5 to 5.0.
  • For students studying English only through ELICOS, there is no change in the test score requirement.
  • Students undertaking university foundation or pathway programs that deliver reputable English language training now require an IELTS score of 5.5 (or equivalent).
